When was the last time your bits were checked?

By Patty Wilber

I have a few bridles that are my go-tos, but to be honest, I don’t inspect them all that often.  The other day, I realized that one of my favorite snaffle bits was wearing out.

Many bits are made of metal, and metal tends be durable, but in snaffle bits, the middle rings rub together, and can eventually can wear out! This one was on the verge of becoming sharp, which would have been very uncomfortable.  That would not have been a good experience for a youngster.

The blue arrow points to the thinning area.

Lucky for me, I have another one just like it that has been on a backup bridle, hanging in my trailer, unused, for quite a few years.  You can see the difference in thickness!

A lightly used bit. The rings are much more robust!

I swapped them out and am back in business, but I better go check all my bits for soundness!

Old bit on the top, new on the bottom.

Happy Friday!

Here's the skinny: I have a thing for horses. They make sense to me. I have a small horse training business (it's a "boutique" training business, not because it's super fancy, but because the horses get a lot of personal attention). I also go by Dr. Wilber, and teach biology full-time at a Central New Mexico Community college.
