Home, Home on the Range…or the Arena

By Patty Wilber

I was riding a good horse, the view of the open range was laid out like a feast for the eyes and I felt deep sense of peace and connection. Also, since the 30-40 mph wind was warm, and I was not engulfed in blinding motes of dust like every windy day last year, it was a nice day, for spring, in New Mexico.

On the downside, Heidi, who was out there with me, could only hear half (or maybe a quarter) of my pithy and inciteful horse training and cattle working tips.

Lucy is not swishing her tail–it is being blown.

Heidi worked Penny and I worked Lucy, and then we swapped. Our two calves had been pretty sour in the arena, but out in the pasture, with no gates to draw them, and no corners to trap them,  those two calves found some new moves that gave our horses something to work!

Then, to add a real job to our cow horse practice, we separated a mamma and her calf from her buddy and moved them out of a five acre trap.  We put a pregnant heifer in. We were pretty efficient at it, too, just saying.

It is very hard to beat the New Mexico sky. Pretty sure Georgia O’Keefe would agree.

The next day, I took Lucy to work with Darren Miller.

Lucy says, “A cow could come out of those gates at any time!”

Everything about her cow work has stepped up because of Darren’s help.  She rates pretty well down the fence, and now when I ask for more speed, she finds it and looks to get by to turn the cow.  My decision making on the cow is also creeping up.

Pretty good first week of my summer “vacation.”

About BlogPatty

Here's the skinny: I have a thing for horses. They make sense to me. I have a small horse training business (it's a "boutique" training business, not because it's super fancy, but because the horses get a lot of personal attention). I also go by Dr. Wilber, and teach biology full-time at a Central New Mexico Community college.

  1. Sounds like a VERY good day. Love Lucy’s ears pointed at the gate.
