The Last Show?

By Patty Wilber

Last weekend was the last New Mexico Buckskin Horse Association show before Sydney heads east to West Virginia for college. She will be studying forensics (Science!  Yay, science!)

She might be able to skip out on a day or two of class and quickly fly back for the August show, which is the last show of the NMBHA 2014 season…

but maybe not.

Maybe not? WAAAA!

*****************************

It has been my privilege to coach Sydney as she developed from being a good but tense-ish rider with a good but unhappy horse to an excellent and empathetic rider with not one, but two horses that would walk through fire for her.

Ok, Penny might do that with a little drama, but she’d still do it. Schmoo–no questions asked.

Sydney and Schmoo

Having horses that execute well is impressive, but having horses that not only execute well, but do it with joy and partnership, is the benchmark to shoot for.

There you go!

There you go!

As Syndey grew in her feel of her horses she was able to retrain Schmoo’s flying lead changes that were crazy AHHH run away! panic attacks (in horse followed by rider followed by horse) into beautiful and seamless maneuvers.

She also helped Schmoo relax over jumps and has him clearing 3 ft with beautiful form.

They have won many titles together and are again headed for the NMBHA youth All-Breed All Around award!

They are an AMAZING team in trail.

They are an AMAZING team in trail.

Sydney had to learn to apply tough love to the mare-y Penny.  Penny is not sweet and cooperative like Schmoo.  She can be opinionated, stubborn and downright lazy, and on the flipside, a Drama Queen.  Trying to figure that out on a daily basis can be, well, trying.

Sydney was persistent and consistent and the results are wonderful.

They can jump!

They can jump!

Sydney also had to retrain Penny to show western pleasure, jog her memory on poles in trail and fix Penny’s weirded-out left lead.

They can do trail!

They can do trail!

They are leading the NMBHA Buckskin Youth 13-18 for the all around title.

Don’t get me wrong, titles and prizes are super, but I am going miss Sydney the smart, hard working, kind, even-tempered person.

And those are exactly the traits that are going make her successful in West Virginia and beyond!

I am SO proud to have been her horse coach!

*sniff*

So proud to BE her horse coach.

One more show!

About BlogPatty

Here's the skinny: I have a thing for horses. They make sense to me. I have a small horse training business (it's a "boutique" training business, not because it's super fancy, but because the horses get a lot of personal attention). I also go by Dr. Wilber, and teach biology full-time at a Central New Mexico Community college.

Patty, Thanks for bringing tears to my eyes. What a sweet blog!
It is so hard to see it all come to an end but so excitiing to watch her go to the next chapter in her life. You have been so good to her and so good for her and her horses! She would never have been able to accomplish what she has without you. We thank you for letting her use Penny after we lost Buford. She was a challenge but one Sydney loved! I thank you for all that you have done for her and me and most of all for your friendship! Even though the training is ending I hope the friendship never ends! We were blessed when you became our trainer. Thanks! Suzette
